To the typical patient, a tooth is the white thing that shows. To dental professionals, the tooth is made up of both the clinical crown (the white part that shows) and the root. In this picture the root of tooth #8 is seen. There is no clinical crown showing. The reason this root was unsavable was due to the large post fractured in this root. Removal of the fractured post and restoration of the remaining root would have been an alternative to tooth extraction, but in my opinion, the path chosen will give the best long term results in the way of greater strength, longevity and lower cost.
