What is bonding any way? One of the major reasons I chose dentistry as my profession is that my own teeth were really discolored. My family dentist tried bonding in 1976, he did the best he knew, but my teeth did not look so great so I figured the way for me to understand how to get my own teeth fixed was to become a dentist. Therefore chairside bonding has become a passion of mine. The commonly held belief among the public is that bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure when in fact, bonding is just a means of attaching to tooth. It is commonly used in cosmetic procedures, but it is also used daily to attach functional restorations to teeth.
The most common type of tooth bonding involves creating porosity in the enamel of a tooth and using a light cured bonding agent (glue) to flow into the porosities as a means of mechanical retention. Most commonly 40% hydocloric acid gel is used to create porosity. Certain dental cements also bond to tooth. The process of bonding by itself is not the cosmetic procedure, but cosmetic dentistry may follow bonding.
