I feel so many different emotions associated with this experience, ranging from pride to fear, as all parents whose first child begins their autonomous life away from “home.” It all began for me on March 11, 1960, my Birthday. I am the second of 5 children of Evelyn Teresa Burdi. I am the oldest child of my moms union with my dad, Luciano Vincenzo Caputo. The first two years of my life were spent in the Bronx, NY. When we moved to Atlantic Beach, Long Island, NY in early 1962, a second child, a daughter, Luciana had been born and mom was pregnant with my brother Richard. My brother, sister and I went through the Lawrence public school system, I graduated from Lawrence Senior High school and attended SUNY Binghamton beginning in 1977, already set on becoming a dentist. It is at this point I can most relate-understand my son Mathew’s position.
Mathew has chosen to continue on in the healing arts, though not dentistry (at this time.) Mathew’s mom, Karen and his aunt Linda are in Boston also for this weekend. Just seeing my son and spending a little time with him will bring me tremendous joy.
I received a degree in Chemistry from SUNY Binghamton in 1981 and went on to attend Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery (SDOS), now known as Columbia School of Dental Medicine. I graduated from Dental school in 1985, then beginning a one year General Dental Residency at Nassau County Medical Center, this is where I met Mathew (and Kendall’s mom) Karen and where my interest in the field of DentaI Implants began. It was also the year that my parents, my brother and my youngest sister, Danielle moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida. After completion of my residency, I worked as an associate for various dentists on Long Island and New York City as well as teaching as an Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry at Columbia Dental School and I took and passed the Florida Dental Boards, receiving my Florida Dental Licence.
During one visit to my parents in November – December 1987, I decided I was going to become a Palm Harbor Dentist. I opened my first Dental Office on April 23, 1988 and placed my first dental implant in October 1989. I am going to end this blog here because I want to go see my son, Mathew at Boston College, how I started this blog.
