Mike and I are holding four of the six keeper trout we caught this weekend in and around Little Gaparilla Island in early October 2013. To be accurate, I caught 4 keepers and Mike caught two. We stayed at his family fish camp, known as “Dreaded Dicks Inn.” I planned it as a thank you fishing trip for my awesome dental team/ family.
Sue began working for me more than 19 years ago in my First Palm Harbor Dentist office. Sue helped me design and move to our current location, still in Palm Harbor, but zip code 34685. Teresa arrived next, beginning in early 2000, shortly after we moved into this office. Marti and I have worked together more than 5 years. Cindy was the next team member to come aboard more than 4 years ago and Wendy is our relative newcomer, but she is a perfect match. The only dental team member who did not go on this trip was Teresa.
We left Tampa on Thursday, October 10, 2013. It was an uneventful 2 hour drive. The main ferry for Hideaway Bay Condo’s was being repaired. We had to unpack and repack our enormous load of supplies. Little Gasparilla Island is a little like “Gilligan’s Island.” No stores, no cars but plenty of luxuries. All those supplies were unpacked and repacked again on “the island.” Mike showed up a little later. Pete and Donna were already at “The Inn.”
Pete and Donna are great people, friends and patients in our Dental Practice, I feel so honored that they drive from Englewood to Palm Harbor to have their Dentistry done. Pete is the main “Island” cook. He works that barbecue grill as no one else can. But we were there to fish!
Wendy, Marti and I set up on the community dock next to Mike’s, fishing with “white bait and pin fish.” We set up an informal competition, who would catch 1)the first fish 2)the biggest fish and 3)the most fish each day. Remember, we arrived on Thursday, and on Thursday evening, I caught a catfish. I was told over and over again by Mike (of course) that catfish don’t count, I think it should since it was the first, only (most) & biggest fish caught.
Friday morning we trolled for mackerel in the morning, caught nothing. Later that day we all packed up in two boats, Mike’s and Pete & Donna’s. Using the bait caught by Pete and Donna, fishing a hole that is one of Mike’s honey-holes, Mike caught the two big keeper trout you see above, I caught three smaller keepers, Mike won biggest, I caught the most and first. Wendy, Cindy & Brett left on Friday. Pete fried those trout to perfection as well as the hush puppies that Donna made.
Saturday was our last full day to fish. The first spot we went to – nothing! Back to that hole from yesterday. Only one keeper trout, not to gloat, but I caught it. Now, I have to ask Mike – does this one count for anything? It was not enough to feed everyone. Pete grilled chicken, we ate like royalty and I slept like a baby.
All good things must end, we drove back home on Sunday, I to Oldsmar, Sue to Palm Harbor, Marti to Clearwater and Mike to SpringHill. I cannot wait to revisit “Little Gasparilla Island”, a little slice of Florida paradise.
