Friday the 13th of June 2014, I left my Palm Harbor, FL dental office thinking of catching fish around Little Gaparilla Island. My son & his friend, my daughter and I jumped into the Toyota Sequoia, packed with minimal clothing but lots of tackle including 5 fishing poles, drove through Tampa, leaving most thoughts of dentistry back in Palm Harbor, we arrived in Placida with time to shop for food before hoping on the 6pm ferry to Hideaway Bay and Dick’s Inn on Little Gaparilla Island. My brother, Richard was due to arrive on Saturday with his daughter – my daughter’s friend.
My buddy Mike was at Dick’s Inn, the family’s fishing camp with his cousin and Pete. Mike’s son was due to arrive that evening. Pete is a master chef using the stainless steel barbecue grill – grilling perfect rib-eye steaks with corn and potatoes. The first and only snafu of the trip was – “where is the golf cart?” A few texts, emails and phone calls later and it magically reappeared – someone had borrowed it, 🙂 (without asking.)
Jason, Mike’s son arrived late Friday, just before an intense tropical downpour. I helped him dock his boat, Mike was a little skittish what with the lightening and all. Donna had to leave for work early on Saturday, since she wanted quiet and I was tired, I was asleep well before midnight.
Early Saturday we got up and did some fishing, Ryan caught this almost 20″ trout, Mike “says” he caught a little snook (I think Jason caught it and let his father hold it for the picture). Richard and Jena arrived, we fished some more. I grilled that evening, burning and over cooking the chicken, but we were having fun – lots of it!
The next day, Sunday, Father’s Day was picture perfect (except I did not catch one fish all weekend), Mike, myself and Richard, fathers with their children, as happy as it gets.
Incredible how the things that make us happy change through life. Sharing Father’s Day with my children, Mathew and Kendall is all I need.
We still needed to leave Paradise and go back home to the Tampa Bay area. Fortunately, I really like being a Dentist in Palm Harbor and returning to work Monday I still felt great.
