Why Do You Need a Dental Check Up?
As I regularly tell my dental patients here in Palm Harbor, FL, regular dental checkups are vitally important for your oral health. But you might not know exactly what these visits or for – other than some annoying probing around your teeth and gums – so let me give you some insight. All the dental patients who come to visit me, Dr. Paul Caputo, have different needs and problems – but there are still some basic services that we perform for all our patients. Here’s what they’re called, and why we perform them.
We use an electric toothbrush to scrub the surfaces of your teeth, and a metal or plastic pick to scrape off plaque. This is important for the health of your teeth and gums, since the brushing and flossing you do at home might not remove or kill all bacteria – especially if you skip a day every now and then. Teeth cleaning also helps us get a clearer look at those tight spaces around your gums and in between your teeth, so we can diagnose problems more accurately.
Basic oral exam
Your dental hygienist – or I, Dr. Paul Caputo – will look closely at the fronts of your teeth, and use a mirror to examine their back sides. We’re looking for bacteria buildup that may have resulted from sugary snacks, or staining from tobacco products. If we see something we suspect may be the start of a cavity or an otherwise damaged tooth, we’ll probably check that out more closely. This exam can help us catch and treat oral health problems before they develop into long-term issues that may require dental surgery – so we can save you money, and save us both a lot of time.
Inspection of dental work
We love to give dental implants to patients who need them – and we also see a lot of patients with dentures, braces, crowns, and other forms of cosmetic dentistry. Oral add-ons like these require extra care, which is why we inspect them extra-carefully. Dental implants cost more than many dentures do, but a well-crafted dental implant is also less prone to bacterial buildup as long as you keep them clean – but even so, they require their own form of special cleaning, as do braces. We’ll take care of all this for you during your dental check up.
Take it from me, Dr. Paul Caputo – a dental check up doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience. Schedule an appointment with my office in Palm Harbor, FL, and we’ll give you a thorough cleaning and inspection with a minimum of oral annoyances. No matter how long it’s been since your last dental check up, you can save yourself a lot of headaches – and toothaches – if you schedule one for the near future.
