If you suspect you may have the start of a cavity, your best bet is to check in with your dentist or me – Palm Harbor, FL dentist Dr. Paul Caputo – and let my expert staff help sort it out, But If you let a bacterial infection get out of control, you may have to come in for a filling. What you might not know is that tooth fillings come in several different varieties, each with its own pluses and minuses. Here are the major types of tooth filling material, and the characteristics of each type.
Silver amalgam fillings
This type of tooth filling was very common for many years, because silver fillings offer durability at a low cost. However, their gray color makes them stand out, which is why many people prefer more modern materials today.
These have also been popular for decades, because they’re durable, non-corrosive, and long-lasting. They may only need to be replaced every 15 years or so. On the other hand, they’re pretty expensive, and can take time to get fitted.
These are made from a material designed to mimic the look of your teeth – but they’re not as durable as metal fillings, and may need to be replaced after 10 years or so. They’re also on the expensive side.
Glass isomer fillings
Made from acrylic and glass, this type of temporary tooth filling lasts for only a few years. We tend to use glass fillings on young children, because their teeth won’t last too many years anyway. Plus, these fillings allow teeth to continue to produce fluoride, which naturally keeps them strong.
These are becoming increasingly common, because they’re white, bright, and very similar in look to your natural teeth.
So which type of dental filling is right for you? It depends on your age, your financial situation, and your priorities – looks or durability.
